Thinking Out Loud - Lyrics to choreography appreciation [x]
Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about this new wave of country. “Bro Country” as it has been called, I feel is terrible and is doing a disservice to country music. A genre I grew up on, went away for awhile but was pulled back in because of guys like Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, and Eric Church. That was in their good days. Lately even they cannot get me to turn my radio on to country music. However, after seeing Jason Aldean in concert last month I had high hopes for this new album. His show, like always rocked. He showed that he is still bad ass.
So here is my review of Old Boots, New Dirt.
I was very skeptical about this album. I have seen many good country stars go down hill after they fall in love (I’m looking at you Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton.) So I was concerned that with Jason’s new found love every song would be a ‘love’ song, but I was hoping with the anguish and upheaval in his life there would be some good rocking country. The first few songs were of course love songs (Just Getting Started and Show you Off) but I will tell you I love Burnin’ It Down. And the first couple of songs have that same vibe, so I kept my hopes up. Trying To Love Me was beautiful and heartbreaking. Sweet Little Somethin’ had the beat I was looking for, but the lyrics lacked any real depth. Laid Back was more of what I was hoping for from this album. It was catchy, had a good beat, and got back to Jason’s country boy roots. Tonight Looks Good On You got back to ‘all about a girl’ theme. It was just okay in my opinion. Too Fast was again one of those I wanted to close my eyes, lean back and just listen. Jason’s voice sounds great on this song and everything else faded away.By the title I was really hoping for more from If My Truck Could Talk. So I wasn’t too impressed, but it wasn’t the worse song on the album. Old Boots, New Dirt, the title track, was exactly what I was expecting from the title. And good for Jason to embrace his new normal and with a great song to go with it. I Took It With Me grabbed me from the first note. This is the kind of song I need and expect from Jason Aldean. A good rocking country song! Both Don’t Change Gone and Miss That Girl left me wanting more. They both were lacking something to me. Gonna Know We Were Here was a great song and I have a feeling will be a single. Two Night Town was a good way to end the album. The guitar at the beginning gets your attention and reminded me of some of Brooks and Dunn best songs, but the lyrics were all Jason.
So overall: I’m satisfied. I am still waiting patiently for country to move forward from this “Bro Country.” But in the meantime I will hang on to Jason Aldean and hope he doesn’t go too far down that road.
Favorite songs: Burnin’ It Down and I Took It With Me.
Feel free to share your thoughts with me! I am interested to see what you guys thought of Jason’s new album.
